From Bozeman to Montana Tech: JR Small's Hockey Journey Continues
JR Small has emerged as an offensive threat for the Montana Technological University (Tech) Hockey Club.
In his first two games, Small notched seven goals and three assists against Idaho State University, propelling Tech to sweep the Bengals.
"I thought the game and the atmosphere in the rink were electrifying! The team rallied the entire game, especially towards the end when the lead was shrinking," exclaimed Small. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lace up the skates with a solid group of teammates.
Small, a Center for the Tech club, honed his skills in Bozeman, playing from mites to his senior year of high school. At 15, he attended the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) 2016 combine in Anaheim, California, representing Montana as the state’s sole invitee, " he said. It felt really special to share a glimpse of what Montana hockey is all about," Small continued.
Reflecting on the WHL Combine, Small shared, "It was humbling to share the ice with guys who eventually made it into the league, and some are now in the National Hockey League."
Choosing Tech over other opportunities, Small was recruited to the golf team and valued the chance to study alongside his closest friend as a business major.
Thrilled to contribute to Butte's thriving hockey scene, Small remarked, "The Butte community has always been supportive of their athletics, regardless of the level of play."
