Montana Tech Shines in Battle of Butte vs. the Irish

Montana Tech University (Tech) faced off against the Junior A Butte Irish of the North American Three Hockey League (NA3HL) in a thrilling contest where Tech emerged victorious.

The game was a result of a scheduling change after the University of Idaho (Idaho) canceled its match, leading to a collaboration between Tech and Irish personnel to make the game happen.

“We [Tech] have also been working closely with the Irish coaches and owner, which made both our lives a little easier. We used two of their young goalies, who are trying out for the Irish. It allowed [Irish Head Coach] Marc [Brodeur] to watch them perform in a game setting. Between the Tech and Irish teams working together to make the game happen after the Idaho cancellation, it turned out to be a great game,” said Tech Assistant Coach Josh Coulombe.

Brodeur also appreciated the opportunity for the two teams to represent Butte hockey and play for pride.

“It’s always a fun time playing Tech because it’s a game of mutual respect where everyone has fun, and it isn’t taken too seriously,” said Irish Head Coach Marc Brodeur.

Due to injuries, Tech started Mathieu Chernauckas in goal, with Derek Strong playing the second half. Both are Irish recruits.

Tech's victory was propelled by a hat trick from Cade Holland, who previously played with the Helena Bighorns of the NA3HL. Former Butte Jr. A player Tamer Billman also scored in the game while suiting up for Tech.

“It was a great way to end the season. Both teams had a good time but still worked hard. It was a good opportunity for future players to get a feel for possible teammates and experience the level of play. It also allowed us as coaches to see who’s coming up the pipeline and how we can fit them in the future. Overall, it was a great way to end a long season,” said Tech Assistant Coach Bryon Lasher.

In a game filled with competitive spirit and community collaboration, Montana Tech's win capped off a memorable end to the season for both teams.
